World Information:
Set in modern Japan, there is the regular world and the underground world of 'Nabari', where the members of different ninja factions gather to pull strings in the political world, and battle things out among the hidden villages, although the focus remains on three main villages and an elite squad, the Grey Wolves, out of Iga Village.
The conflicts between the groups arise over a being called the 'Shinra Banshou'- the ultimate jutsu that contains all of the universe's knowledge. Although attempts have been made to seal it, each time a host dies, the Shinra Banshou possesses a new human, waiting to give them the option to use the secrets within the knowledge that she holds.
Anyone who can use the Shinra Banshou automatically becomes the King of Nabari, provided they survive the experience.
Most hosts are unable to ever use her, the toll on the human's body to be too much, but ten years prior to the beginning of the story, the previous Shinra Banshou host was able to use her to commit an ultimate sin - to revive someone back to life and change history. In doing so, many memories were sealed away, with the exception of one man who remembered everything - Tobari Durandal Kumohira.
All factions are openly searching for the Shinra Banshou, in an effort to extract her and seal her away so she cannot be used, although not every faction is open about their intentions, and many individuals seek out the current host Miharu Rokujou to ask for one favour or another should he activate her skills.
Personal History:
Yoite's parents were excited to be awaiting, presumably, a girl. They had picked out the name Sora, but when the time came, his mother died in childbirth. Yoite was born intersex, and is neither male nor female, so he never identified himself as Sora, even if that became his name. His relatives called him an Angel of Death from the moment he was born, for killing his mother with his arrival. They decided to make it so he never existed and locked him in the basement of their home, with bars on the windows and anything he got to eat was at their mercy. He was entertained by books, and he found himself wondering just who he was supposed to be.
His father remarried, and his new wife despised his existence, more than willing to play along with the ruse, treating him as little more than a ghost in their house. Although most of his time was spent in the basement, he was allowed to attend church, and did so frequently, until he was fourteen. Their son was forbidden from speaking with Yoite, but it was tempting for him to sneak him out to play catch one day. Furious, the incident led to a physical altercation that ended with his stepmother attempting to slit his throat on one side. She tried to get her son to finish the job, but he dropped the knife and fled. Yoite took the opportunity then to flee himself, hand on his neck as he wanted nothing more to do with anything. He collapsed in the middle of town, looking at least five years younger than his age and covered in blood.
He was found by a man named Tojuro Hattori, the leader of the Iga clan and the head of the Grey Wolves in the world of Nabari. Yoite desired nothing more than to disappear, and seizing the advantage to make himself a useful tool, Hattori promised he would deliver this if he learned the Kira technique. Yoite studied diligently and within a year, had mastered the forbidden technique. He was sent to Kazuhiko Yukimi, given to him to look after as he was still a minor. Yoite suffered extreme consequences, such as a sudden growth spurt of nearly a foot over three days thanks to the effect on his body the Kira had. He was silent and when he was given to Yukimi, it was without a name. The leader didn't think it was necessary to name someone who was essentially condemned to death. It was Yukimi who gave him the name Yoite, meaning 'wind of the night'. The name was the first thing Yoite had said in two years when he repeated it back, accepting the name without complaint. From that moment on, Yukimi did his best to keep Yoite fed and healthy while he did missions for the Grey Wolves, using his forbidden technique, and watched as it slowly ravaged his body.
It was during one of these missions that they encountered Miharu and his friends, the Banten ninjas. As they were adversaries, Yoite attacked all of them, but because they were Miharu's friends and he wanted to curry favour with the Shinra Banshou, he did little else than injure them. He sought out Miharu later to ask him for his help - to erase him so it was that he never lived. He threatened him, saying that when he attacked his friends, he left a part of his qi within them and if he died, they would die too. Miharu extracted a promise from him that he wouldn't die until he was able to fulfill his wish.
Miharu saw him as a kindred spirit, someone who was maybe indifferent to the world as he was and began to show kindness to Yoite, who didn't take it well at first, but as their relationship evolved, he found himself caring more for Miharu than he expected. He made his own choice to protect Miharu from the shadows, through botching missions at first up until he made enemies of the Grey Wolves and the Iga Village near the end, fleeing with Miharu.
On their long trip to Banten alone together, he confessed to him that the threat was a lie and that his friends would be okay if he died. Miharu got very upset with him and wanted to know why he'd tell him that now, and demanded he keep his promise not to die. Yoite was finally coming to the realization that he was alive, although this would not be the case for very much longer.
Personality:
The main thing people know about Yoite is that he is quiet and can seem very threatening. Most people only see him when he's working on a mission and he's a ruthless killer. He doesn't think twice about taking the lives of his targets, and implies he would kill children if they were in the way. He holds the same disregard for his own life, as he's never felt like he has fit into the world. He is incredibly secretive about his feelings on any given subject, including the fact he is actively walking to his own death.
He embraced his position as a tool of the Grey Wolves because he was desperate to at least have something to hold onto. He does not actually want to die - he wants to have never existed. This mindset is a clear result of the abhorrent abuse he suffered for the majority of his life. He does not take compliments or kindness well. He doesn't think he deserves anything.
He's tormented by the fact he has no identity and questions if he is even alive in this state. When he returns home, he can't bring himself to say 'I'm home'. He doesn't want to acknowledge the attachment, because he's afraid to make it. He always says goodbye, instead of 'see you later' just in case they don't.
The skill Yoite has learned is incredibly difficult, and as a result, Hattori considers him to be smart and diligent. The amount of education he's received is suspect, it would appear he was homeschooled, but he certainly picked up good study habits, enough to decipher an old scroll and learn a forbidden technique. He's also considered to be beautiful by the man, something he doesn't acknowledge or agree with. He's also seen as pathetic, which he would acknowledge, because his self-image is rather low.
He doesn't see himself as fitting into the male or female gender and while he is mostly addressed as 'he', personally he goes back and forth between the male and female designations of 'I' when he is thinking about it, although he tends to lean more towards the male side of things. He won't remove his clothing with anyone else around him and would rather freeze in wet clothes than do that.
Prior to meeting Yukimi, he held no attachments to anyone. It is only recently that he has begun to realize that he is actually fond of Yukimi, and to the point where he nearly told him he was 'home'. The true catalyst to his change is Miharu. Upon meeting Miharu, the kindness he was shown and slowly came to accept wore down his loneliness and the emptiness in his heart. He dramatically shifted focus with the promise that Miharu would grant his wish, to protecting him covertly, until he betrayed everyone to protect him openly.
Their friendship means everything to Yoite, because it's through this that he's learned kindness, and found a place to be. He would die to protect Miharu, and the reason why he is still hanging on is because of a promise he made to remain alive for his sake. Yoite does not see a path to redemption, but he does think that maybe he is alive and his life can have meaning, if only to Miharu. The change is so impactful that when his previous leader attempts to tell Miharu to give up on Yoite's wish, and that he would change the world so pitiful people like him didn't exist, it brings him to tears. He believes Miharu will make the right choice when the moment comes.
He accepts that his fate is to die, that is without question at this point considering the severe damage his body has taken, but every step closer to death finds him unexpectedly grieving. This is because of the significance he's found at Miharu's side, that now he finds losing his senses to be somewhat devastating. He's had moments where he's suddenly found himself inexplicably crying at the loss, particularly the fact he can't taste anything. While he used to eat a lot, as he becomes sicker, he has been eating less and less.
Miharu's kindness has also influenced Yoite's ability to be empathetic. While he is a dangerous individual, the connection with Miharu has led to him using his qi manipulation abilities for a few good things, including healing Miharu's eye, and waking Gau from his coma. These are actions he never would have considered, had he not met and formed a connection with Miharu.
Key themes:
Abuse: Yoite's entire life has been filled with people for the most part who want him to not exist, and this has coloured his perceptions of himself and the world around him in drastic ways.
Redemption: While he perceives himself as irredeemable, he does take several steps towards redemption in Miharu's name, finding his kindness infectious enough to help others, and form bonds with them, even if he never could have imagined it some months before.
Self-Destruction: Yoite not only believes he should not exist, but he is directly on a path to destroying himself, with little regard for the consequences to his person, and at no point does he actually stop doing so, in the end.
Main Motivation:
His connection to Miharu becomes all-consuming for him. He begins by trying to threaten him into doing his bidding, until they actually become friends, and he gives up everything he was to protect Miharu. He is alive because he wants to keep his promise to him not to die, and it was particularly telling when he fessed up that he was lying. Miharu brought light and kindness into his life, and gave him something to live for and a reason to recognize that no matter what else was going on - he's alive.
Skills:
Taijutsu: Yoite demonstrates a significant skill in hand to hand combat techniques, and at the point he is no longer using his Kira techniques, he can use these skills to protect himself and Miharu.
Speed: Despite the fact that moving at a great speed takes a toll on his body, in a combat situation, he still accomplishes this. He is an elite ninja, after all.
Quiet/Sneaking: This is somewhat self-explanatory.
Kira Technique: The Kira technique is a technique of qi manipulation. Yoite transfers his qi from his body to his opponent's and at that point he can do just about anything. He can stop their heart, their breathing, or he can be much messier and cause them to burst from the inside out, which is one of the most common things he has done with it. He can also use this technique on inanimate objects by destroying them with his qi alone. On the other side of that, he can use his qi to right damage to people's bodies, especially if he was the one that caused it. This experience is said to transfer part of his feelings to the person temporarily. The backlash to this is that Yoite cannot regenerate his own qi and he is killing himself every time he uses it.
Item: The soft, handmade scarf that Hanabusa Seki made for Miharu and was gifted to him.
Sample: Here and here.
Notes: Yoite is sick and dying. He explicitly has heart damage and skin damage from the qi manipulation technique as well as varying degrees of loss of senses. He sometimes coughs up blood.
For the purpose of the game - I'll be rolling back some of this cardiac damage so he's not required to be constantly on medication, and presumably his techniques can no longer kill him, but he won't really get better.
He's already lost some parts of his sense of touch (where the qi burns are) and he has no sense of taste to speak of. His hearing is most often not in working order anymore and when it is he can hear very little. His vision is working more often than it isn't, and when he isn't completely blind, he does have some vision loss to the point his vision is somewhat blurred. His sense of smell is intact.
